Global Credit Crisis: Avoid the Fear Frenzy

The news outlets love a good crisis. And from all accounts, we've got one on our hands. You would have to be living under a rock not to know that there is a global credit crisis happening. My father is monitoring it on CNBC in all of his waking hours. Every conversation with him includes his telling me to "tighten my belt".

Am I scared? Do I choose to feel fearful during this global credit crisis? No. Absolutely not. I mean, what's the point? So that I plug back in to the mass media and join the drama? Thank you, no. I choose to avoid drama. And I especially choose not to join the fear frenzy.

This does not mean that I am not informed. I know what's going on. I know that there are some economic fundamentals that are on shaky grounds. I understand that when lawmakers told banks they had to hold more assets to compensate for risky loans, that they created a big loophole.

My former economics professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Allan Meltzer, who was against the failed $700 billion bailout, said in an NPR interview last week, "It makes very little economic sense to me and I think it is terrible social policy to have a system where the bankers make the money and the public takes the losses."Listen to his full interview here. (You may not agree with Meltzer's policies, but he is one of the smartest professors that I had in my MBA program at Carnegie Mellon.)

He goes on to say that there are many ways that the federal government and the Fed could prevent widespread panic. Well, I think that is too late. There is widespread panic. What can we do? Choose not to participate in this panic and widespread fear. Here are three reasons for you to choose courage over fear:

1. Your choice to feel fear will feed the fear frenzy and make things worse.
2. If you choose to feel fear, you will burn out your adrenals and shorten your lifespan.
3. Fear freezes action, courage opens opportunities.

I said in my last newsletter, that this one would focus on my letting go process - so here it is. I use this whenever my internal sense of peace and serenity has been disturbed.

When I notice that I am feeling less than peaceful, content, or serene, I take a deep breath and notice what is going on with my mind-body. I then welcome any feeling that I am experiencing - fear, anxiety, anger, etc. I let myself experience the full feeling without any judgement of it being "bad" or "wrong". Then, I ask myself if I could just let it go. I am kinesthetic, so it helps for me to tighten my fist over my heart and then slowly release my fist. Then, I ask, could I let it go now? It doesn't matter if my answer is yes or no - but it is important that I give the first answer that comes to me.

Now, I didn't create this technique. It is my preferred method, after trying lots of different ways of letting go and it is called The Sedona Method. (Note: I feel it is important to share your mentors and sources and not to pretend that you invented something yourself.)

And, as with anything, take what you like. Leave the rest. Don't get caught in the dogma trap.

Value Your Self, not Your Stuff

I work to maintain a prosperity consciousness within myself. One that is not dependent upon the balance of my bank account or my wardrobe or size of my house. That new outfit? Out of style in a few years. That new house? Needs a new roof in 30 years. My inner peace? Never wears out. Never rusts. Always valuable.

I want to feel prosperous from the inside out - and not depend upon the world to set up the right situation so that I then allow myself to feel prosperous. And years of work on this seems to be working. Even amidst a global credit crisis, I feel prosperous.

I am healthy. I share my life with a loving, supportive husband and two absolutely amazing little beings who are my daughters. I love the place I live. I am get lots of energy from my work. I exercise and have fun on a daily basis. I eat healthful foods. I focus on the positive in myself, other people, and the world.

I am prosperous.

How prosperous do you feel right now? Would connecting to your Life Purpose help you feel more prosperous?
